Peter T. Brazis III, M.D., certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, specializes in refractive surgery to correct nearsightedness, corneal transplants, and cataract surgery. His expertise includes radial keratotomy (RK), photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) procedures for nearsightedness. He uses the new wavefront technology for customized ablation in LASIK and LASEK surgery. A pioneer in refractive surgery, he performed the first radial keratotomy in Illinois in 1980. No one has been performing surgery for nearsightedness longer in Chicagoland than Dr. Brazis. He was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Loyola University Medical Center, where he taught RK for twenty-four years and LASIK since its inception. Dr. Brazis is a certified VISX Excimer laser surgeon. Many of the other surgeons in Chicago have been trained by Dr. Brazis. He has been involved with laser surgery for nearsightedness for over eight years. He has done research in refractive surgery and has lectured, operated and taught physicians internationally on five continents including the countries of Nigeria, Nepal, India, Egypt, and Indonesia. Patients have been sent to him from Morocco, Mexico, India, and other countries.
Dr. Brazis was chosen by the American Academy of Ophthalmology to speak at its Refractive Surgery Subspecialty Day and the Chicago Ophthalmological Society at its meeting. He has appeared numerous times on television and radio talking about RK and LASIK. Recently he spoke to the Royal Jordanian Ophthalmological Society in Amman, Jordan and at Damascus University in Syria.
He has been a consultant for the Los Angeles-St. Louis Rams NFL football team for nineteen years and co-produced the radio show "Your Health Matters" for four years. This weekly radio show discussed varied medical and health issues. He is an amateur baseball player, playing at the Chicago White Sox baseball camp.
Dr. Brazis received his medical degree from Loyola University School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency. This was followed by a fellowship in corneal and external diseases of the eye at the University of Texas. Much of his practice is seeing patients who have been referred to him by other surgeons. Many physicians and their family members come to him for their surgery. He has done thousands of cataract operations, performing small incision, no-stitch cataract surgery, and over fifteen hundred corneal transplants.
Dr. Brazis has been at the Wheaton Eye Clinic for over twenty-five years and was co-director of Corneal Services at Loyola University Medical Center. He was also on staff at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center and has been the Chief of Ophthalmology at Central DuPage Hospital twice. At Hines VA Hospital he has been a consultant for twenty-five years.
Dr. Brazis has the distinction of being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Illinois Eye Bank Committee of the Chicago Ophthalmology Society. His memberships also include the International Society of Refractive Surgeons, the Chicago Ophthalmological Society, the AMA, and others.
