Nutritional Supplements Proven to Slow the Rate of Vision Loss in Seniors

Wheaton Eye Clinic has recently made available a new series of nutritional supplements to slow the loss of vision for people with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is a disease in which people lose vision from the central retina (macula) and its nourishing cells. This usually starts after age 55 and gets progressively worse. There is no cure for AMD, which affects more than 13 million Americans and is the leading cause of legal blindness in people over the age of 65 in the Western world.

However, based on the results of a six-year study of 4,757 people by the National Eye Institute, the Wheaton Eye Clinic has begun offering nutritional supplements rich in Zinc and Vitamins A, C and E to its patients suffering from AMD. Dr. Richard Geiser, Wheaton Eye Clinic specialist in retinal-vitreous disease, said, "Results of the Institute's Age-Related Eye Disease Study were very encouraging. Patients with advanced signs of AMD had a significantly lower rate of visual loss when using a combination of antioxidant vitamins and zinc. The vitamins also were useful in people with mild to moderate macular degeneration."
