“Although
I’ve been an optician for over 30 years, my more than
a dozen here at the Wheaton Eye Clinic have been the most
interesting. Because of all the medical conditions we see,
patients often need me to explain prescriptions or translate
something a doctor may have said,” explains Dan. “Although
I never alter a prescription, sometimes I will go back to
the doctor to see if he or she can specify something that
gives the patient a different choice.
For example, bifocals are set according to a standard arm length. But a tall man with long arms may need to read at a distance further than the standard used in the prescription. Multi-focals are also tricky. In order to properly fit a patient I need to know all the things those glasses are going to be used for - reading, sports, driving, computer work – so that I can explain the realities of the lenses. I enjoy working through each special situation. The major motivator for me every day is to see a happy, contented smile on someone’s face when he or she puts on new glasses.”

with two grown children. He enjoys exercising, including
time spent on his two favorite hobbies, bicycling and golf.
