He graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine after which he completed an internship at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. This was followed by a residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and his fellowship in uveitis at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in Chicago.
